How to remove background noise from audio
- Drop your recording on the box above, or tap to choose it. Cleaning starts automatically with settings that suit most voice recordings.
- Press play and switch between Before and After. Raise “Noise reduction” for more cleanup, lower it if the voice starts to sound watery. Turn on hum removal for electrical buzz.
- Choose MP3 or WAV and tap “Save cleaned audio”.
How it works: the tool finds the quietest moments in your file, learns what the background noise sounds like there, and turns down those frequencies everywhere else (spectral noise reduction). A high-pass filter removes low rumble from traffic, wind and desks, optional notch filters remove 50/60 Hz mains hum and its harmonics, and a noise gate quiets the pauses between words.
Tip: it works best on steady noise (fans, air conditioning, hiss, hum, room tone). Sudden sounds like barking, music or other people talking are not removed. Leave a second or two of “silence” in your recording so the tool can learn the noise.
Frequently asked questions
Is this noise remover free?
Yes. No sign-up, no watermark, no file limits from us. Very long files (over about an hour) may be too big for a phone's memory.
Are my recordings uploaded?
No. All processing happens in your browser on your own device, so private interviews and voice notes stay private.
What kinds of noise can it remove?
Steady background noise: hiss, fan and air-conditioner noise, computer hum, electrical 50/60 Hz hum, room tone and low rumble. It can't separate voices from music or remove sudden noises like a dog barking.
Why does my voice sound watery or robotic after cleaning?
The noise reduction is set too high for that recording. Lower it to 30–50% and the artifacts go away. A little remaining noise usually sounds more natural than none.
Should I use the noise gate?
Use it for speech with gaps, like podcasts, voiceovers and lectures. Turn it off for music, or if the start or end of words gets cut; you can also lower the threshold or choose a gentler depth.
Can I remove noise from a video?
You can drop an MP4 video to clean its soundtrack and save the audio as MP3 or WAV. To put it back in the video, use your video editor.
Can it remove vocals or music from a song?
No. That needs a different tool (a vocal remover). This one is for background noise.
